Canadian payroll ERP
Turning a single monolithic PHP payroll app into a modular ERP with accounting and HR integrations.
Websentials ran payroll for Canadian businesses on a PHP application with no real module structure. Over several years I worked on splitting it into modules, fixing long-standing issues and automating forms that staff used to fill by hand.
What I worked on
- Payroll calculation and employee leave modules
- Integrations with QuickBooks, NetSuite, Zoho, BambooHR and others
- Reporting, and email notifications with PDF attachments
- Multithreaded workers to push thousands of API calls quickly
- Chunked submission for very large forms
What I took from it
Payroll has no tolerance for "mostly right". It taught me to design data carefully, test the edge cases, and build integrations that fail loudly instead of silently.
